Refaat Alareer:
Refaat Alareer, a Palestinian poet, academic, and activist, lost his life in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza, alongside six members of his family. Beyond his position as an English literature teacher at the Islamic University of Gaza, Alareer was widely revered for his deeply moving portrayals of the Gazan experience. To countless Palestinians, he was not only a role model but also a cherished mentor whose words resonated deeply.
Before his death, Alareer shared a powerful poem from 2011 titled “If I Must Die,” in which he contemplated the possibility of his own death. Little did he know that his premonition would tragically come true. Since his passing, the poem has taken on a life of its own, spreading rapidly across the globe and prompting translations into numerous languages. In death, Alareer's words continue to echo, serving as a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of the Palestinian people and the profound impact of his legacy.
